"Make strategic use of algebraic structure, the properties of operations, and/or reasoning about equality to solve: • linear absolute value equations in one variable or simple rational and radical equations in one variable."

What you'll learn

  1. Solve a linear absolute value equation in one variable, finding every solution or determining that there is none
  2. Interpret $|a|$ as the distance from $a$ to zero, and explain from it why $|A| = d$ splits into exactly two cases
  3. Determine from the isolated right side whether the equation has two, one or no solutions
  4. Solve an absolute value equation whose right side contains a variable, rejecting candidates that fail in the original equation
  5. Translate between $|x - c| = d$ and a distance or tolerance statement in words
