What you'll learn

  1. Rewrite an expression by using its structure — a compound sub-expression, a disguised template or an identity — when that is faster than expanding
  2. Substitute a single letter for a repeated compound sub-expression, apply a known template, and substitute back
  3. Recognize a factoring template disguised by higher degree, a compound argument or unwritten perfect squares, and confirm by the factor-pair search whether it factors
  4. Find unknown coefficients in a "for all values of $x$" identity by matching corresponding coefficients
  5. Decide from a scan whether structure is present, and rewrite toward a question's stated target form
