Lesson Plan

Using algebraic structure to rewrite expressions

Goals / Objectives

Rewrite an expression by using its structure — a compound sub-expression, a disguised template or an identity — when that is faster than expanding

Substitute a single letter for a repeated compound sub-expression, apply a known template, and substitute back

Recognize a factoring template disguised by higher degree, a compound argument or unwritten perfect squares, and confirm by the factor-pair search whether it factors

Find unknown coefficients in a "for all values of $x$" identity by matching corresponding coefficients

Decide from a scan whether structure is present, and rewrite toward a question's stated target form

Standards

"Make strategic use of algebraic structure and the properties of operations to identify and create equivalent expressions:" "Make strategic use of algebraic structure, the properties of operations, and/or reasoning about equality to solve:"
