What you'll learn

  1. Write a one-variable linear equation that models a described situation, with the variable defined by quantity and unit, solve it, and answer the question as asked rather than with the solved variable's value
  2. Translate comparison phrases — "more than," "less than," "subtracted from," "twice," "of" — into algebraic expressions with the correct operand order
  3. Recognise the constant-plus-rate structure, identifying the constant and the rate (negative when the quantity decreases), and use the model forward by substituting and backward by solving
  4. Write an equation setting two expressions equal, to model a break-even or catch-up situation
  5. Convert units before modelling when the problem's quantities are reported in mismatched units
