Lesson Plan

Writing linear equations from word problems

Goals / Objectives

Write a one-variable linear equation that models a described situation, with the variable defined by quantity and unit, solve it, and answer the question as asked rather than with the solved variable's value

Translate comparison phrases — "more than," "less than," "subtracted from," "twice," "of" — into algebraic expressions with the correct operand order

Recognise the constant-plus-rate structure, identifying the constant and the rate (negative when the quantity decreases), and use the model forward by substituting and backward by solving

Write an equation setting two expressions equal, to model a break-even or catch-up situation

Convert units before modelling when the problem's quantities are reported in mismatched units

Standards

AF 402. Perform straightforward word-to-symbol translations (Algebra/Functions, 20–23) A 502. Solve real-world problems by using first-degree equations (Algebra, 24–27) AF 502. Build functions and write expressions, equations, or inequalities with a single variable for common pre-algebra settings (e.g., rate and distance problems and problems that can be solved by using proportions) (24–27) AF 601. Solve word problems containing several rates, proportions, or percentages (28–32) AF 602. Build functions and write expressions, equations, and inequalities for common algebra settings (e.g., distance to a point on a curve and profit for variable cost and demand) (28–32) AF 702. Build functions and write expressions, equations, and inequalities when the process requires planning and/or strategic manipulation (33–36) AF 403. Relate a graph to a situation described in terms of a starting value and an additional amount per unit (e.g., unit cost, weekly growth) (20–23)
