Common Core Math - Grade 4

Lesson Plan

Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form

Goals / Objectives

Read and write multi-digit whole numbers (up to the millions) in three forms: standard form (base-ten numeral), word form (number names), and expanded form

Convert fluently among the three forms -- given any one representation, produce the other two

Use periods (ones, thousands, millions) and commas to read and write large numbers correctly, reading each period group as a unit

Compare two multi-digit whole numbers by examining digits place by place from the leftmost place, and record the result using >, =, or < symbols

Explain why a digit's position determines its value and use that reasoning to justify comparisons
