Common Core Math - Grade 4

Lesson Plan

Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right

Goals / Objectives

Explain that each place in a multi-digit whole number represents ten times the value of the place to its right (ones to tens, tens to hundreds, hundreds to thousands, and so on)

Explain the inverse relationship: each place represents one tenth of the value of the place to its left

Compare the values of the same digit appearing in two different places within a number and state that one value is ten times (or one tenth of) the other

Use a place value chart and base-ten block models to demonstrate the ten-times relationship between adjacent places

Apply concepts of place value and division to explain why a number like 700 divided by 70 equals 10

Standards

4.NBT.A.1: Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 700 / 70 = 10 by applying concepts of place value and division.
