4.NBT.A.1: Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 700 / 70 = 10 by applying concepts of place value and division.

What you'll learn

  1. Explain that each place in a multi-digit whole number represents ten times the value of the place to its right (ones to tens, tens to hundreds, hundreds to thousands, and so on)
  2. Explain the inverse relationship: each place represents one tenth of the value of the place to its left
  3. Compare the values of the same digit appearing in two different places within a number and state that one value is ten times (or one tenth of) the other
  4. Use a place value chart and base-ten block models to demonstrate the ten-times relationship between adjacent places
  5. Apply concepts of place value and division to explain why a number like 700 divided by 70 equals 10
