ACT Math
Lesson Plan
Piecewise-defined and step functions
Goals / Objectives
Evaluate a piecewise-defined function at a given input by first selecting the correct rule from the input's interval
Graph a two- or three-piece piecewise function, using open and closed circles correctly at the boundaries
Determine the domain and range of a piecewise-defined function from its definition or its graph
Rewrite $|x|$ as a two-piece function and explain why the two pieces agree at 0
Evaluate a step function, including the greatest-integer function, at integer and non-integer inputs
Match a described real-world pricing or fee situation to the correct step-function graph
Standards
F 507. Interpret statements that use function notation in terms of their context — score range 24-27, lines 280-282 F 506. Understand the concept of domain and range in terms of valid input and output, and in terms of function graphs — score range 24-27, lines 276-279 A 504. Match compound inequalities with their graphs on the number line (e.g., –10.5 < x ≤ 20.3) — score range 24-27, lines 234-237 A 606. Solve absolute value equations — score range 28-32, lines 326-327 AF 704. Analyze and draw conclusions based on information from graphs in the coordinate plane — score range 33-36, lines 369-370
