F 506. Understand the concept of domain and range in terms of valid input and output, and in terms of function graphs
F 508. Find the domain of polynomial functions and rational functions
F 509. Find the range of polynomial functions
F 510. Find where a rational function's graph has a vertical asymptote
A 513. Determine when an expression is undefined
F 505. Understand the concept of a function as having a well-defined output value at each valid input value
What you'll learn
- Define domain as the set of valid input values and range as the set of output values those inputs produce
- Read the domain and range of a function from its graph using a two-sweep method, reporting both as inequalities
- State the domain of a polynomial function as all real numbers, and explain why
- Find the domain of a rational function by setting the denominator equal to zero, solving, and excluding the solutions
- Locate the vertical asymptotes of a rational function's graph from its excluded inputs
- Find the range of a polynomial function, distinguishing the odd-degree case (all reals) from the even-degree case (bounded by the vertex)
