What you'll learn
- Write a complex number in standard form `a + bi`, using `i^2 = -1`, and name its real part `a` and imaginary part `b`
- Explain why no real number satisfies `x^2 = -1`, and state the definition `i^2 = -1`
- Rewrite `sqrt(-k)` for positive `k` as `i*sqrt(k)`, including cases where `k` is not a perfect square
- Classify a number as real (`b = 0`), pure imaginary (`a = 0`), or complex with both parts nonzero, recognising every real number as complex
- Solve `a + bi = c + di` for unknowns by matching real and imaginary parts
