ACT Math

Lesson Plan

Imaginary unit i and standard form a + bi

Goals / Objectives

Write a complex number in standard form a + bi, using i^2 = -1, and name its real part a and imaginary part b

Explain why no real number satisfies x^2 = -1, and state the definition i^2 = -1

Rewrite sqrt(-k) for positive k as i*sqrt(k), including cases where k is not a perfect square

Classify a number as real (b = 0), pure imaginary (a = 0), or complex with both parts nonzero, recognising every real number as complex

Solve a + bi = c + di for unknowns by matching real and imaginary parts
