Lesson Plan

Interpreting regression slope and intercept in context

Goals / Objectives

Interpret the slope and intercept of a line of best fit in context as the model's predictions for the trend (the slope as a predicted change in the response per one-unit change in the predictor, with units derived by division; the intercept as the predicted value when the predictor is zero), worded as an estimate rather than as a fact about each case

Decide from the data's range whether an intercept has a meaningful interpretation in context

Compare a predicted value to an actual value for one case, and state whether the model over- or under-predicted it

Distinguish a correct interpretation of a fitted coefficient from its common misreadings, including a causal claim made from a fitted relationship

Standards

"Given a relationship between two quantities, read and interpret graphs modeling the relationship." "Analyze and interpret data represented in a scatterplot to make predictions." "Fit linear models to data represented in a scatterplot." "Analyze and interpret data represented in a scatterplot, but do not make predictions." "Analyze and interpret data represented in a scatterplot to make predictions." "Fit linear models to data represented in a scatterplot." "Fit quadratic and exponential models to data represented in a scatterplot." "Given a relationship between two quantities, read and interpret graphs modeling the relationship." "Compare linear and exponential growth."
