Lesson Plan

Circumference and area of circles

Goals / Objectives

Find any of a circle's radius, diameter, circumference and area from any other, using C = 2πr = πd and A = πr²

Explain π as the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter, and explain why the area formula squares the radius

Give answers exactly in terms of π or as decimal approximations, and match the form the question asks for

Compare circumference and area for the same circle, including how each changes when the radius doubles

Find the area and perimeter of semicircles, quarter circles, and rings (the region between two circles with the same center), including in real-world contexts

Standards

Area and volume — SAT Description, PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 Description, and PSAT 8/9 Description (same wording in all three): "Solve real-world and mathematical problems about the: • area or perimeter of a geometric figure or an object that can be modeled by a geometric figure using given information." Area and volume — all three columns: "Demonstrate procedural fluency by selecting the correct: • area formula and correctly calculating a specified value." Circles — SAT Description only (the Circles row has no PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 or PSAT 8/9 entry): "Use definitions, properties, and theorems relating to circles and parts of circles such as radii, diameters, tangents, angles, arc lengths, and sector areas to solve problems."
