Lesson Plan
Distinguishing linear, quadratic, and exponential models
Goals / Objectives
Classify a relationship given as a table, a graph, or a verbal description as linear, quadratic, or exponential, and write the model of that family from the given values
Classify a table by which of its first differences, ratios, or second differences is constant, and explain why a constant second difference indicates a quadratic
Classify a graph by its distinguishing feature: curvature, a turning point, or a horizontal asymptote
Classify a verbal description by whether the change per period is a fixed amount or a fixed percent or multiple
Explain why exponential growth eventually exceeds any linear growth
Standards
"Identify or create an appropriate quadratic or exponential function to model a relationship between quantities." "Create and use quadratic or exponential functions to solve problems in a variety of contexts."
