Lesson Plan

Simplifying and operating with rational expressions

Goals / Objectives

Simplify, multiply, divide, add and subtract rational expressions, stating the excluded values of the result

Explain cancellation as multiplication by a factor equal to 1, and identify when nothing cancels

State excluded values from the original denominators, including one hidden by a cancelled factor or created by a divisor's numerator

Add and subtract rational expressions using the LCD built from factored denominators

Simplify a compound fraction by treating the main fraction bar as division

Distinguish rewriting an expression from solving an equation, and explain why denominators may not be cleared in an expression

Standards

"• including rewriting simple rational expressions, rewriting expressions with rational exponents in radical form, and factoring polynomials not included in the preceding bullet." "Make strategic use of algebraic structure and the properties of operations to identify and create equivalent expressions:"
