Common Core Math - Grade 4

Lesson Plan

Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place

Goals / Objectives

Round a multi-digit whole number to any specified place (tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, hundred-thousands)

Use a number line model to explain why a number rounds to a particular multiple of the rounding unit

Apply the midpoint convention -- when a number is exactly halfway between two multiples, round up

Explain the effect of rounding on digits: digits to the left of the rounding place stay the same, digits to the right become zero

Use rounding to produce reasonable estimates for real-world quantities such as costs, populations, and distances
