ACT Math

Lesson Plan

Arithmetic with complex numbers

Goals / Objectives

Add, subtract and multiply complex numbers, reducing i^2 to -1 and writing every result in standard form a + bi

Add and subtract complex numbers by combining real parts and imaginary parts separately

Multiply a complex number by a single factor or by a second complex binomial, squaring a binomial by expanding it as a product

Compute (a+bi)(a-bi) and state why the result is real

Explain why the like-terms analogy holds for complex addition but fails for complex multiplication

Standards

"N 606. Multiply two complex numbers" "N 504. Exhibit some knowledge of the complex numbers" "N 704. Apply properties of complex numbers and the complex number system"
