ACT Math
Lesson Plan
Solving systems (substitution, elimination, graphing)
Goals / Objectives
Determine whether a given ordered pair is a solution of a system by substituting into both equations
Solve a system of two linear equations by substitution, choosing the variable to isolate from the coefficients
Solve a system of two linear equations by elimination, including cases where both equations must be scaled
Solve a system of two linear equations by graphing, and explain why the point of intersection is the solution
Select the most efficient method for a given system by reading its form
Translate a two-quantity word problem into a system of two linear equations and solve it
Standards
A 604. Solve systems of two linear equations A 403. Solve routine first-degree equations A 601. Manipulate expressions and equations AF 503. Match linear equations with their graphs in the coordinate plane AF 602. Build functions and write expressions, equations, and inequalities for common algebra settings (e.g., distance to a point on a curve and profit for variable cost and demand)
