Lesson Plan

No-solution and infinite-solution systems

Goals / Objectives

Determine whether a system of two linear equations has exactly one solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions — from what elimination leaves (a solvable equation, a false statement such as 0 = 7, or an identity such as 0 = 0) or, without solving, by comparing slopes and then intercepts — and explain each case as crossing, parallel or coincident lines

Produce several solutions of a system with infinitely many solutions

Classify a system as consistent-independent, consistent-dependent, or inconsistent

Find the value of a parameter that forces a system to have no solution or infinitely many

Standards
