Self-paced work is invisible until the test
A student can work hard all period on her own and you have no signal she's struggling until the unit test — by which point she's been stuck for weeks.
"Stuck" and "did nothing" look the same
A grid of blanks doesn't tell you which students need a small group and which simply haven't started. Those are different problems and different interventions.
A flag with nowhere to go isn't a signal
Knowing five students are behind doesn't help if there's no fast path from "she's flagged" to "she's got the right practice assigned."
One overall score hides where the gap actually is
A single grade tells you a student is behind, not on which of the strand's standards. You need to know what to reteach, not just who.

What moves a student's mastery
Mastery is a status the system computes from demonstrated performance — never something you, a tutor, a parent, or the student can set directly.
Assigned work always counts
Anything you assign feeds mastery the moment it's graded — no change from what you already expect.
Self-paced work counts too, when it's hers
A student browsing and practicing on her own, inside your class, moves her own mastery. Free practice outside a class does not — that boundary is enforced server-side, not by a form field.
Mastery only ever goes up
Once a standard is mastered, TruePace doesn't take it back based on one bad day. Simple and defensible, and it's what you'd assume by default.
You can correct a placement — never overwrite evidence
TruePace's starting guess for a student is yours to correct if it's wrong. Demonstrated mastery, once earned, is never something a person can undo.
“Stuck” means trying and not succeeding — a real attempt that isn’t landing. A student who hasn’t started is flagged differently: she’s absent from the work, not struggling with it, and that’s a different conversation. Neither student ever silently disappears from your roster.
