Warm-Up: Angles on a Straight Line

Look at the corner of this set square:

  • Small square symbol = right angle:
  • Two right angles on a line = straight angle:
  • Angles on a straight line always add to

Parallel Lines: Never Meet, Constant Gap

  • Definition: two lines that never meet, however far you extend them
  • The perpendicular distance between them stays constant
  • Marked with matching arrowheads on both lines

Think of railway tracks — two rails never touch, yet the gap stays equal all the way to the horizon.

Intersecting Lines and Perpendicular Lines

Skew Lines Exist Only in 3-D

  • Neither meet nor parallel — only possible in three dimensions
  • On flat paper, lines are always coplanar — skew can only be represented

You Can Recognise Lines — Now Construct Them

Can you construct a pair of parallel lines precisely — not by eye, but with tools?

  • A transversal cuts across two or more other lines
  • When a transversal crosses parallel lines, special angle patterns appear
  • Construct first, then explore those patterns

Why the Set-Square Method Preserves Parallelism

Direction preservation is the key:

  • Ruler = fixed guide rail
  • Set square slides along it without rotating
  • Kept direction = drawn edge always points the same way
  • Same direction = parallel

Any rotation of the set square breaks the guarantee.

Constructing Parallel Lines: 5 Steps

Draw a line parallel to AB, 4 cm away:

  1. Draw line
  2. Lay one set-square edge along
  3. Hold ruler against a second edge
  4. Slide set square 4 cm along ruler — don't rotate
  5. Draw along the original edge; mark both with arrowheads

Verify Your Construction with a Protractor

  1. Draw a slanting transversal across both lines
  2. Measure the angle at the first crossing
  3. Measure the corresponding angle at the second crossing

Truly parallel? Both measurements are equal.

If they differ: the set square rotated — redo the construction, holding the ruler firmly.

Direction Preserved Means Angles Repeat

A transversal across parallel lines gives equal angles at both crossings.

  • Both lines face the same direction
  • So the transversal hits them at the same angle
  • Pattern at the first crossing is reproduced at the second

Vertically Opposite Angles Are Always Equal

When two lines cross:

  • Vertically opposite — face each other across the vertex, sharing only it
  • Always equal — at any crossing

"Vertical" = "at the vertex" — not up-and-down.

⚠️ Adjacent angles on a line = linear pair — sum , not vertically opposite.

Corresponding Angles — The F-Shape

Transversal cuts two parallel lines:

  • Corresponding — same position at each crossing
  • Trace an F — both angles at the same corner
  • Equal when lines are parallel

Alternate Angles — The Z-Shape

Transversal cuts two parallel lines:

  • Alternate — opposite sides of the transversal, between the lines
  • Trace a Z (or N)
  • Equal when lines are parallel

Trace the Z — one angle top-right, one bottom-left.

⚠️ Alternate angles are between the lines — not outside the parallel pair.

Co-Interior Angles — The C-Shape

Transversal cuts two parallel lines:

  • Co-interior (allied) — same side, between the lines
  • Trace a C or U
  • Add to when parallel — supplementary

Trace the C — both angles inside its curve.

One Angle Determines All Eight

One transversal across parallel lines makes 8 angles — only 2 distinct values:

  • : corresponding, alternate, and vertically opposite partners are equal
  • : co-interior and linear-pair neighbours
