Which Side Are the Negatives On?

  • Negative integers are to the left of zero
  • Positive integers are to the right of zero
  • Zero is neither positive nor negative

Integers on the Number Line

  • An integer is a whole number: positive, negative, or zero — no fractions
  • Opposite integers are the same distance from 0 on different sides
  • +3 and −3 are opposites; the opposite of 0 is 0

Which Is Larger: −5 or −2?

Movement on the Number Line

The movement rule:

  • To add → step RIGHT (forward) — the number gets larger
  • To subtract → step LEFT (backward) — the number gets smaller

Start at the first number. The second number tells you how many steps.

Two Worked Examples: Adding and Subtracting

Example 1:

Start at −3, step 5 right → land on +2

Example 2:

Start at 4, step 6 left → land on −2

Why Add = Right and Subtract = Left

  • Further right is larger (from Chunk 1)
  • Adding increases your value → step right
  • Subtracting decreases your value → step left

Movement direction follows from ordering — not a separate rule to memorise.

Subtracting a Negative: The Key Idea

What happens when you subtract a negative?

  • Subtracting reverses direction
  • A backward step reversed is a forward step
  • Removing a debt makes you richer

Worked Example: Subtracting a Negative

(start at 2, step 3 left → −1)

(start at 2, step 3 right → +5)

Subtracting a negative flips the direction: LEFT becomes RIGHT.

Every integer word problem follows the same cycle:

  1. Translate — write the signed operation from the words
  2. Compute — carry out the operation
  3. Interpret — state what the sign means in context

Step 3 is where marks are lost: correct number, missing sign = wrong answer.
