Learning Objectives:
UGX โ Foreign = DIVIDE ยท Foreign โ UGX = MULTIPLY
Exchange Rates (January 2025):
Key question: What currency are you starting with?
Problem: Amina has 45,000 Uganda Shillings. She converts half of it to US Dollars and the other half to British Pounds. How many US Dollars and British Pounds will she get?
Let's break this down together!
UNDERSTAND: 45,000 Shs โ half to USD, half to GBP Rates: 1 USD = 3,750 Shs ยท 1 GBP = 4,850 Shs
PLAN โ 3 steps:
WORK:
ANSWER: Amina gets 6 US Dollars and about 4โ5 British Pounds
Problem: A trader buys goods from Kenya worth 1,200 KES, paying in Uganda Shillings. He sells them and earns 40,000 Shs. What is his profit in Uganda Shillings?
Work in groups of 4-5 โ 4 minutes:
Given: Cost = 1,200 KES ยท Revenue = 40,000 Shs ยท Rate: 1 KES = 29 Shs
ANSWER: The trader made a profit of 5,200 Uganda Shillings
Problem: Alice wants to save money for a trip. She has two options:
Which option gives her more money in Uganda Shillings? By how much?
Let's solve this together!
Rate: 1 USD = 3,750 Shs
Convert Option 2: 3 ร 3,750 = 11,250 Shs
Compare: 11,250 vs 10,000 โ Difference = 1,250 Shs
Option 2 (3 USD) gives more money โ by 1,250 Shs!
Problem: James has 24,250 Shs. A shirt costs either:
Can he afford both? Which leaves him more money?
Work in pairs โ 4 minutes!
James has 24,250 Shs. Rates: 1 GBP = 4,850 Shs ยท 1 USD = 3,750 Shs
Better choice: Option B (USD shirt) โ he'll have 1,750 Shs left!
Problem: Peter travels to Tanzania with 12,000 Uganda Shillings. How many Tanzanian Shillings will he get? (1 TZS = 1.60 Shs)
Work individually:
You have 2 minutes!
Peter has 12,000 UGX ยท Rate: 1 TZS = 1.60 Shs
Converting UGX โ TZS = DIVIDE: 12,000 รท 1.60 = 7,500 Tanzanian Shillings
He gets more TZS โ the Tanzanian Shilling is weaker!
Remember: Foreign โ UGX = Multiply ยท UGX โ Foreign = Divide
Ask yourself these questions:
What operation(s) would you use? Identify only โ don't solve:
The pattern: identify what you have, then choose the operation.
Exercise book โ 5 minutes:
You can now: โ Name currencies from different countries โ Read and understand exchange rates โ Convert UGX to foreign currencies (divide) โ Convert foreign currencies to UGX (multiply) โ Solve multi-step currency problems โ Compare values and make smart decisions
These are real-life skills for your entire life!
