Learning Objectives:
Now let's learn to go BACKWARDS!
If I tell you: ? × ? = 25
And both numbers are the same...
What number did I multiply by itself?
Because 5 × 5 = 25
This is called finding the SQUARE ROOT!
The square root of 25 is 5.
The square root of a number is the value that, when multiplied by itself, gives that number.
Example:
We write: √25 = 5
Read as: "The square root of 25 equals 5"
Start with 5 → Square → Get 25 → Square root → Back to 5!
Square (×itself) 5 ─────────────────→ 25 ←───────────────── Square Root (√)
To find √36, ask yourself:
"What number times ITSELF equals 36?"
Think through your times tables...
√49 = 7
√64 = 8
√100 = 10
A square garden has an area of 64 m². What is the length of one side?
Solution:
A square tile has an area of 81 cm². What is the side length?
49 chairs are arranged in a square formation. How many chairs are in each row?
What is √36?
If 8² = 64, what is √64?
What does the symbol √ mean?
Find √100
√36 = 6
√ means "square root of" (what × itself equals this number)
If n² = m, then √m = n
They are INVERSES!
Find: √4, √25, √49, √100, √144
Complete: If n² = 36, then n = ___
If n² = 81, then √81 = ___
A square playground has area 121 m². Find the side length.
Write the relationship between 9² = 81 and √81 = 9
You can now find square roots!
