Lesson Plan
Choosing models for scatterplot data
Goals / Objectives
Choose the model family (linear, quadratic, or exponential) that a scatterplot or table of measured data supports, and say why the other two are out
Classify a cloud from its shape: a turning point, with values symmetric about it, signals quadratic; steepening without turning signals exponential
Confirm the family with the constant-difference test and, when it fails, the constant-ratio test, judging whether measured ratios are close enough to constant
Compare linear and exponential growth over a shared interval, locate the crossover, and recognize that a short data window can end before it
Standards
"Fit linear models to data represented in a scatterplot." "Fit quadratic and exponential models to data represented in a scatterplot." "Compare linear and exponential growth."
