Lesson Plan
Polynomial operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide)
Goals / Objectives
Add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomials, writing each result in standard form
Name the terms, coefficients, degree and leading coefficient of a polynomial
Expand $(a+b)^2$, $(a-b)^2$ and $(a+b)(a-b)$, and explain from the box grid why only $(a+b)(a-b)$ has no middle term
State the degree, the leading coefficient, or one coefficient of a sum or product without fully expanding it
Divide a polynomial by a linear binomial by long division, reporting quotient plus remainder over divisor
Standards
"Fluently add, subtract, and multiply polynomials." "Make strategic use of algebraic structure and the properties of operations to identify and create equivalent expressions: • by factoring polynomials limited to finding a common factor, rewriting binomials that represent a difference of two squares, and rewriting trinomials as the product of two binomials. • including rewriting simple rational expressions, rewriting expressions with rational exponents in radical form, and factoring polynomials not included in the preceding bullet."
