Lesson Plan
Electric Potential
Goals / Objectives
Define electric potential energy and electric potential (voltage), distinguishing between the two
Calculate the electric potential at a point due to a point charge using V = kq/r
Determine the work done moving a charge between two points at different electric potentials using W = qΔV
Describe equipotential surfaces and explain their relationship to electric field lines
Relate the concepts of electric potential and potential energy to the conservation of energy framework from mechanics
Standards
18.4
"We now define the electric potential V, which is the electric potential energy per unit charge." "Normally, the electric potential is simply called the potential or voltage. The units for the potential are J/C, which are given the name volt (V) after the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta (1745–1827)."
