Represent addition and subtraction with objects, drawings, and equations

Goals / Objectives

Use physical objects (cubes, counters, fingers) to act out addition situations (putting together) and subtraction situations (taking away)

Draw simple pictures to represent addition and subtraction situations

Connect a concrete or pictorial representation to a verbal explanation (e.g., "I had 3 apples and got 2 more, now I have 5")

Recognize that addition means combining groups and subtraction means removing from a group

Begin to connect representations to expressions or equations using +, -, and = symbols
