Common Core Math - HS Statistics and Probability
Lesson Plan
Compute and interpret the correlation coefficient
Goals / Objectives
State that the correlation coefficient r measures the strength and direction of a linear association on a scale from -1 to +1
Compute r using a calculator or spreadsheet
Interpret the sign of r as direction and the magnitude as strength, and match r values to scatter-plot appearance
Recognize that r measures only linear association and does not establish causation
Standards
HSS.ID.C.8
HSS.ID.C.8: Compute (using technology) and interpret the correlation coefficient of a linear fit.
