Lesson Plan

Summarize categorical data in two-way frequency tables

Goals / Objectives

Construct a two-way frequency table from raw paired categorical data, including row totals, column totals, and the grand total

Compute joint, marginal, and conditional relative frequencies and distinguish them by their denominators

Interpret each type of relative frequency as a contextual statement ("out of whom is this a percentage?")

Recognize a possible association between two categorical variables by comparing conditional relative frequency distributions

HSS.ID.B.5: Summarize categorical data for two categories in two-way frequency tables. Interpret relative frequencies in the context of the data (including joint, marginal, and conditional relative frequencies). Recognize possible associations and trends in the data.
