Fit data to a normal distribution

Goals / Objectives

Recognize the normal (bell) curve and state that it is symmetric about the mean and fully determined by the mean and standard deviation

Apply the empirical (68-95-99.7) rule to estimate the percentage of a population within 1, 2, or 3 standard deviations of the mean

Compute a z-score and use a calculator, spreadsheet, or table to estimate the percentage of data below, above, or between given values

Judge from a distribution's shape whether fitting a normal model is appropriate, and recognize when it is not

HSS.ID.A.4: Use the mean and standard deviation of a data set to fit it to a normal distribution and to estimate population percentages. Recognize that there are data sets for which such a procedure is not appropriate. Use calculators, spreadsheets, and tables to estimate areas under the normal curve.
