Common Core Math - HS Statistics and Probability
Lesson Plan
Compare center and spread of data sets
Goals / Objectives
Compute the mean, median, interquartile range (IQR), and standard deviation of a data set (by hand for small sets, with technology for large sets)
Judge the shape of a distribution from its plot and select the appropriate measures of center and spread
Explain why the median and IQR are resistant to outliers while the mean and standard deviation are not
Compare two or more data sets by reporting matched, shape-appropriate statistics for center and for spread
Write a contextual comparison that addresses both center and spread, not center alone
Standards
HSS.ID.A.2
HSS.ID.A.2: Use statistics appropriate to the shape of the data distribution to compare center (median, mean) and spread (interquartile range, standard deviation) of two or more different data sets.
