Lesson Plan

Apply the general Multiplication Rule

Goals / Objectives

State the general Multiplication Rule, P(A and B) = P(A) * P(B | A) = P(B) * P(A | B)

Apply the rule to compute joint probabilities for dependent events, such as draws without replacement

Use tree diagrams to organize sequential events, multiplying conditional probabilities along branches

Recognize the independence special case, where P(B | A) = P(B) reduces the rule to P(A) * P(B)

Interpret a computed joint probability in terms of the model and its context

Standards

HSS.CP.B.8

HSS.CP.B.8: (+) Apply the general Multiplication Rule in a uniform probability model, P(A and B) = P(A)P(B|A) = P(B)P(A|B), and interpret the answer in terms of the model.
