Understand independence via the product rule

Goals / Objectives

State that two events A and B are independent if and only if P(A and B) = P(A) * P(B)

Explain independence intuitively: one event occurring does not change the probability of the other

Determine whether two events are independent by computing P(A), P(B), and P(A and B) and comparing P(A and B) to the product P(A) * P(B)

Distinguish independent events from dependent events using the product-rule test on real data

Distinguish independence from mutual exclusivity as different relationships between events
