Common Core Math - HS Geometry

Lesson Plan

Use shapes to describe objects

Goals / Objectives

Identify appropriate geometric shapes to model real-world objects (e.g., modeling a tree trunk as a cylinder)

Use properties of geometric shapes (length, width, height, radius, angle measures) to describe and analyze real objects

Explain the trade-offs between simple models (easier to work with) and complex models (more accurate)

Apply geometric modeling to estimate measurements of real objects (volume, surface area, etc.)

Recognize that geometric models are approximations and understand when approximations are appropriate

Communicate modeling choices clearly, justifying why a particular shape was chosen to represent an object

Standards

HSG.MG.A.1

HSG.MG.A.1: Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects (e.g., modeling a tree trunk or a human torso as a cylinder).
