Common Core Math - HS Functions

Lesson Plan

Solve trigonometric equations

Goals / Objectives

Isolate the trigonometric expression in an equation arising from a modeling context

Apply arcsin, arccos, or arctan to find a principal solution to a trigonometric equation

Use periodicity and symmetry to find all solutions within a specified interval

Use technology (calculator) to evaluate inverse trig functions for non-standard values

Interpret solutions in terms of the real-world context (e.g., "the height reaches 40 feet at t = 2.3 minutes")

Determine which solutions are meaningful in the modeling context and discard extraneous ones

Standards

HSF.TF.B.7

HSF.TF.B.7: (+) Use inverse functions to solve trigonometric equations that arise in modeling contexts; evaluate the solutions using technology, and interpret them in terms of the context.
