Common Core Math - HS Functions

Lesson Plan

Model periodic phenomena

Goals / Objectives

Identify the amplitude, period, and midline of a sinusoidal function from its equation y = A sin(Bx) + D or y = A cos(Bx) + D

Determine amplitude, period, and midline from a real-world context (maximum and minimum values, cycle length)

Write a sinusoidal model given contextual information about a periodic phenomenon

Decide whether sine or cosine is more appropriate based on starting conditions (e.g., starts at midline vs. starts at maximum)

Interpret the parameters A, B, and D in terms of the physical context being modeled

Use a sinusoidal model to predict values at specific input values
