Common Core Math - Grade 8

Lesson Plan

Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles

Goals / Objectives

Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the hypotenuse of a right triangle given both legs

Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find a missing leg of a right triangle given the hypotenuse and the other leg

Solve two-dimensional real-world problems by identifying right triangles within geometric figures (diagonals of rectangles, heights of isosceles triangles, distances across fields)

Solve three-dimensional problems that require applying the Pythagorean Theorem more than once (space diagonal of a rectangular prism, height of a cone given slant height)

Express answers in exact form using simplified radicals and as decimal approximations, choosing the appropriate form based on context
