Common Core Math - Grade 5

Lesson Plan

Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors

Goals / Objectives

Find whole-number quotients with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors using a strategy based on place value or the properties of operations

Use estimation to determine reasonable partial quotients when dividing by a two-digit number

Represent a division problem using a rectangular area model, identifying the dividend as the area, the divisor as one dimension, and the quotient as the other dimension

Explain and justify each step of a multi-digit division calculation using equations, arrays, or area models

Interpret remainders in the context of a problem and express them appropriately

Verify a quotient by multiplying the quotient by the divisor and adding any remainder to check that the result equals the dividend

Standards

5.NBT.B.6: Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
