Common Core Math - Grade 4

Lesson Plan

Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers

Goals / Objectives

Solve word problems that require two or more steps using any combination of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Represent a multistep word problem using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity at each step

Interpret remainders in division problems according to context -- deciding whether to drop the remainder, round up to the next whole number, or use the remainder itself as the answer

Assess the reasonableness of an answer using mental computation and estimation strategies, including rounding, both before and after solving

Use a work-backward-from-the-question strategy to identify what information is needed and plan the sequence of operations

Standards

4.OA.A.3

4.OA.A.3: Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
