Common Core Math - Grade 4

Lesson Plan

Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison

Goals / Objectives

Explain what a multiplicative comparison is and how it describes a "times as many" relationship between two quantities

Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison statement (e.g., 35 = 5 x 7 means "35 is 5 times as many as 7")

Read a multiplication equation in both comparison directions (e.g., 35 = 5 x 7 means both "35 is 5 times as many as 7" and "35 is 7 times as many as 5")

Represent a verbal multiplicative comparison statement as a multiplication equation

Distinguish between a multiplicative comparison ("5 times as many as") and an additive comparison ("5 more than") given the same pair of quantities

Standards

4.OA.A.1

4.OA.A.1: Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 x 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.
