Common Core Math - Grade 4
Lesson Plan
Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units
Goals / Objectives
State from memory the key conversion factors within the metric system (1 km = 1,000 m, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 kg = 1,000 g, 1 L = 1,000 mL) and the customary system (1 ft = 12 in, 1 lb = 16 oz, 1 hr = 60 min, 1 min = 60 sec)
Describe a measurement relationship as a multiplicative comparison -- for example, "1 foot is 12 times as long as 1 inch"
Convert a measurement expressed in a larger unit to an equivalent measurement in a smaller unit by multiplying (e.g., 4 ft = 4 x 12 = 48 in)
Generate a two-column conversion table showing number pairs for a given unit relationship and identify the multiplicative pattern in the table
Apply unit conversion to solve real-world and mathematical problems involving length, mass/weight, capacity, and time
Standards
4.MD.A.1
4.MD.A.1: Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), ...
