ACT Math
Lesson Plan
Magnitude and unit vectors
Goals / Objectives
Compute a vector's magnitude and use it to produce the vector of a specified length in a given direction, by normalising and then scaling
Compute |v| = sqrt(a^2 + b^2) in exact and decimal form, and derive it from the Pythagorean theorem using the components as legs
Explain why a magnitude is never negative, and why two vectors with equal magnitude need not be equal
Decide whether a problem asks for a vector or a magnitude, and rank vectors by magnitude
Construct and verify the unit vector in the direction of a given vector, including when the magnitude is irrational
Standards
"N 607. Use relations involving addition, subtraction, and scalar multiplication of vectors and of matrices" "N 403. Comprehend the concept of length on the number line, and find the distance between two points" "N 405. Find the distance in the coordinate plane between two points with the same x-coordinate or y-coordinate" "G 605. Use the distance formula"
