ACT Math
Lesson Plan
Matrices for systems of equations
Goals / Objectives
Read a system of two linear equations as the matrix equation AX = B, and confirm by multiplying out AX that it reproduces the system
State the dimensions of A, X, and B, check that AX is defined and has the shape of B, and identify an undefined product
Derive X = A^-1 B by multiplying both sides on the left, and explain why X A^-1 and B A^-1 are undefined
Explain why an invertible coefficient matrix guarantees exactly one solution, and why det(A) = 0 rules out a unique solution
Standards
"N 705. Multiply matrices" "N 706. Apply properties of matrices and properties of matrices as a number system" "A 604. Solve systems of two linear equations"
