Lesson Plan

Determinants (2x2)

Goals / Objectives

Use the determinant ad - bc of a 2x2 matrix to decide whether the matrix has an inverse and, when it does, construct that inverse

Compute det(A) = ad - bc, including matrices with negative entries, reading |A| as the determinant rather than an absolute value

Explain why a determinant of zero means no inverse exists, and give "no inverse" as the answer in that case

Construct the inverse of an invertible 2x2 matrix by swapping, sign-flipping, and scaling by 1/det(A)
