Lesson Plan

Distance formula

Goals / Objectives

Compute the distance between two points using d = sqrt((x_2-x_1)^2 + (y_2-y_1)^2)

Derive the distance formula from the Pythagorean theorem by constructing a right triangle on the coordinate grid

Find the perimeter of a polygon given vertex coordinates by summing pairwise distances

Determine whether a triangle is right, isosceles, or equilateral by comparing its side lengths computed via the distance formula

Solve ACT-style problems where the distance and one endpoint are given, or where three points are given and the closest pair must be identified

Standards

G 605. Use the distance formula N 405. Find the distance in the coordinate plane between two points with the same x-coordinate or y-coordinate G 602. Use the Pythagorean theorem
