ACT Math
Lesson Plan
Vertical and horizontal shifts
Goals / Objectives
Given a function $f$, write the equation whose graph is $f$ shifted up or down by a stated amount
Given a function $f$, write the equation whose graph is $f$ shifted left or right by a stated amount
Explain why $y = f(x-3)$ shifts the graph right by 3, by reference to which input makes the inside zero
Apply the point-mapping rule: a point $(p, q)$ on $f$ moves to $(p+h, q+k)$ on $y = f(x-h)+k$
Read the shift parameters off an equation such as $y = (x+2)^2 - 5$, and state the image of the parent's key point
Explain that a shift is rigid motion, so the shifted curve is congruent to the parent
Standards
AF 604. Given an equation or function, find an equation or function whose graph is a translation by a specified amount up or down AF 706. Given an equation or function, find an equation or function whose graph is a translation by specified amounts in the horizontal and vertical directions G 407. Translate points up, down, left, and right in the coordinate plane AF 705. Identify characteristics of graphs based on a set of conditions or on a general equation such as y = ax² + c A 403. Solve routine first-degree equations
