ACT Math
Lesson Plan
Function composition f(g(x))
Goals / Objectives
Evaluate a composite function at an integer input by working inside out, writing the intermediate value explicitly
Write the simplified expression for $f(g(x))$ by substituting $g(x)$ into $f$'s input slot
Demonstrate numerically and symbolically that $f(g(x))$ and $g(f(x))$ are generally different, and state that composition is not commutative
Read the notation $(f \circ g)(x)$ and identify which function acts first
Determine when an input is invalid for a composite because the inner function's output is invalid for the outer function
