ACT Math
Lesson Plan
Solving rational equations
Goals / Objectives
Solve a rational equation by listing its excluded values, clearing denominators (by the LCD, or by cross-multiplication when the equation is one fraction equal to one fraction), and rejecting any candidate that is an excluded value
Explain why clearing denominators can produce an extraneous solution
Solve a rational equation whose cleared form is quadratic, reporting the solution set correctly when a root is rejected
Set up and solve a work-rate problem that produces a rational equation
Standards
A 513. Determine when an expression is undefined F 508. Find the domain of polynomial functions and rational functions F 510. Find where a rational function's graph has a vertical asymptote A 601. Manipulate expressions and equations A 605. Solve quadratic equations AF 703. Analyze and draw conclusions based on properties of algebra and/or functions
